Lemongrass is a fast-growing, perennial tropical grass known for its fresh lemon fragrance and flavor. The plant forms dense clumps of long, slender, arching leaves that are bright green and blade-like, with slightly sharp edges. When crushed, the leaves release a strong citrus aroma.
A mature lemongrass plant typically reaches 3–5 feet (1–1.5 m) in height and spreads about 2–3 feet wide, making it attractive for gardens, borders, or containers. The base of the plant develops thick, pale green to whitish stalks (often used in cooking), which are firm and juicy.
Lemongrass thrives in warm climates, full sunlight, and well-draining soil. It is easy to grow, drought-tolerant once established, and can be grown outdoors or indoors in pots. Besides its culinary uses, lemongrass is valued for its ornamental look, pleasant scent, and natural insect-repelling qualities.
Grown for foliage that is aromatic and tender. Used in Thai cooking. Tall Tropical grass. Medicinal properties.
Water regularly, self sows freely, dead head if you do not want volunteer seedlings next season. Easy to grow as a patio plant.
